All of us here at Sherpa VR care about your comfort and enjoyment when renting our equipment. Sometimes it might happen that a member of your party is prone to something called “simulation sickness,” which is basically motion sickness while wearing a VR headset. However, we are here to help, and we’ve got the tools to mitigate simulation sickness, so no one in your group feels left out.
Here’s How We Do It
Mitigating simulation sickness or motion sickness while using a VR headset is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable virtual reality experience. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you alleviate these discomforts:
Choose the Right VR Equipment:
We opt for VR headsets with higher refresh rates (90Hz or above) as they can reduce motion blur and flickering, which are common triggers for simulation sickness. This is one of the reasons we use the Meta Quest 3.
Proper Calibration and Setup:
Ensure that the VR headset is properly calibrated and adjusted to fit your head snugly but comfortably. We will help with this.
Set up the VR play area according to manufacturer guidelines, allowing for enough space to move around safely without feeling disoriented.
Take Regular Breaks:
If it’s particularly bad, we may limit your VR sessions to short durations, especially when you’re new to virtual reality. We may start with sessions as short as 10–15 minutes and gradually increase the duration as you acclimate to the experience.
Take breaks between sessions to rest your eyes and allow your vestibular system to recalibrate. This can significantly reduce the risk of simulation sickness.
Choose Comfortable Environments and Games:
Select VR experiences that are known to be comfortable for beginners, such as stationary or slow-moving experiences, rather than fast-paced action games with intense locomotion. We have lots of games that fall into these categories.
Avoid experiences with excessive artificial locomotion, such as rapid acceleration or deceleration, as they can trigger motion sickness. You can even play while seated.
Use Comfort Settings:
Many VR games and applications offer comfort settings that can help reduce motion sickness. These settings may include options for reducing field of view during movement, adding static reference points, or employing teleportation instead of smooth locomotion. We know all about this, and can help dial in the right settings.
Control Your Movement:
When playing games with free locomotion, move your head and body naturally to simulate walking instead of using the joystick or controller for continuous movement. This can help minimize motion sickness by syncing your physical movements with those in the virtual environment.
If you start feeling queasy, try closing your eyes and pausing the game until the sensation subsides.
Stay Hydrated and Avoid Heavy Meals:
Dehydration and a full stomach can exacerbate motion sickness symptoms. Drink plenty of water before and during VR sessions, and avoid consuming heavy meals or alcohol beforehand.
Address Physical Discomforts:
Ensure that you’re in a comfortable physical position while using the VR headset, with proper posture and support for your neck and back.
If you wear glasses, make sure they fit comfortably within the VR headset to avoid any additional pressure on your face. Again, we will help to make sure the fit is perfect, even if you are wearing glasses.
Don’t Worry. We’ve Got You Covered.
